Forest products can be classified as (i) timber products and (ii) non-timber forest products (NTFPs). Forest Department organizes the harvesting and the marketing of timber based products and the nationalised non-timber forest produce such as tendu and apta. 'The Maharashtra Tribal Economic Conditions ( Improvement ) Act, 1976', conferred the monopoly purchase rights in respect of 31 NTFPs on the Tribal Development Corporation (TDC) in the Scheduled Areas. Accordingly, the TDC is organizing the procurement / marketing of specified NTFPs. The Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 conferred the ownership of MFP on the Panchayats in the Scheduled Areas. The communities of scheduled tribals and other traditional forest dwellers are being conferred the ownership of Minor Forest Produce (NTFPs) under 'The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditonal Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006'.
Prior to implementation of the Joint Forest Management Programme, the marketing rights of a few non-nationalised NTFPs, in non-scheduled areas, used to be auctioned on annual/periodic basis by the Forest Department .Since 1992 the JFMCs are being encouraged to organize collection and marketing of NTFP in their areas. The JFMC members were given rights for collection of 33 types of non-timber forest produce in non scheduled areas .Till June-2013, about 12595 JFMCs have been established and 26.97 lakh Ha. of forests were brought under the programme. The JFMCs are organizing collection, Processing , Value addition and of marketing various NTFPs. An amount of 103.56 lakh was received by the JFMCs through the sale of non-timber forest produce during 2011-13. Citizens can promote the livelihood opportunities of these forest dwellers through the purchase of their products.
