History of Nashik

The greatest of all shows on the land of India, the world renowned Maha Kumbhmela also happens in this city. It happens every 12 years and attracts tourists from all over the world. The important aspect of Kumbh mela is the astonishing unity amidst diversity that occurs in this sacred occasion
As the legend has it, one of the greatest hero of Indian epics, Lord Rama, along with wife Sita and brother Laxmana stayed here for a while during their 14 year exile. Rame advised tosettledown in Panchvati, so called because of the five great banyan trees, which grew there. Panchvati was then the fringe of the Dandakaranya Forest.nbsp; It is from here Ravana abducted Sita and took her to his palace on the island of Lanka, now known as Sri Lanka. It was here Laxman cut off the nak (nose) of Ravanas sister Surpanakha, thus was the the name Nashik arrived on. The temples, the ghats on the Godavari river have made Nashik the holiest place for Hindus. The holy events like the Namavali, Rath Yatra, Nagbali add many folds to the already large number of pilgrims visiting the Sacred land of Nashik. Nashik is a very lively city in industrial and social arena as well. This city has become a major attraction also due to the clean and green surroundings and the ever so pleasant climate.
Nashik city is located in Indias state of Maharashtra . The city is in the north west of Maharashtra some 185 km from Mumbai and 202 km from Pune. This city popularly known as theWine Capitalof India else theGrape cityis located in the Western Ghats, on the western edge of the Deccan Peninsula. Nasik is the administrative headquarters of both Nashik district and Nashik division. This city is famous for its picturesque surrounding and the pleasant climataure.
Jalgaon and Aurangabad districts lie to the east of Nashik. To its south lies Ahmednagar, to its west Thane district and a part of Gujarat state, Dhule district and a part of Gujarat lie to its North. There are various types of land forms in Nashik district. In the western part of the district lie the Sahyadri mountains. Vani and Chandwad hill ranges lie in the central part, while the Kalsubai hill range is to the south. In addition, Salher-Mulher, Ramshej, Ankai-Tankai and Anjneri hills also lie in the district. In the hilly regions of the district, there are several peaks such as Hanuman, Salher, Mulher and The Ghodap pass lies in the Chandwad hill range. Thalghat, Rahudbari and Bhaudbari are some of the ghats in the district. The two main rivers in Nashik district are the Godavari and the Girna. The Darna, Godavari, Aram, Kadwa and Mosam rivers all have their source in the hilly parts of the Sahyadris and flow eastwards. Only the river Damanganga flows westwards and the Vaitarna southwards. The rivers Girna and Mosam confluence near Malegaon. Darna, Banganga and Kadwa are the tributaries of the Godavari.

Nashik abounds in forest wealth. The forests lie in the western part of the district. Surgana, Umbarthan,Kalwan, Peint, Dindori, Nashik and Igatpuri talukas have a numbers of forests. Teak and Sissoo trees are found in large numbers in these forests. Besides these, trees and shrubs like Anjan, Agave Bamboo etc. are also found here. The forests are inhabiuted by wild animals such as Leopards, Wolves, Hyenas, Foxes, Black bucks and birds like Koels, Kingfisher, Peacocks etc.
