Introduction
The Zoo Authority of Maharashtra was established vide GR No. WLP 0515/C.R. No.150/F-1 dated 30/12/2015 (Encl) with a mission to provide better upkeep and veterinary care to the wild animals housed in zoos and rescue centers in Maharashtra to ensure their conservation through best practices of management and bringing education & awareness amongst the various section of the Society.
It is registered under the Registration of Companies Act, 1860 vide Maha-230/168 (No) dated 07/04/2016 and Registration No F-34156 (N) dated 30/05/2016 under the Mumbai Public Trusts Act, 1950.
Administration
The Zoo Authority of Maharashtra is the society registered under the societies Registration Act 1860. The registered office of the society viz., The Zoo Authority Maharashtra is situated at Nagpur, Maharashtra.
Area of the operation of the Zoo Authority of Maharashtra is the whole state of Maharashtra including adjoining territorial waters.
Authority of society Consist of
- The Governing Council
- The Executive Committee and
- Such other authorities as may be constituted by the Governing Council or the Executive Committee.
Memorandum of association and the regulations of the Governing Council and Executive Committee of The Zoo Authority of The Maharashtra are being approved by the Government Resolution.
Governing Council
Subject to the Rule of the Society, the management, supervision and control of the affairs of the Society shall vest in the Governing Council.
The members of the Governing Council Shall Constitute the General Boby of the Society and Shall consist of not less than seven (07) members.
Subject to the provision of the Act
The Governing Council Shall meet at least once a year
Rights, Powers and Duties of the Governing Council:
- Formulation of guiding principles and procedures for achieving the objectives of the Authority.
- Approval of the Annual Plan of Operations, Annual budget and Annual report of the Authority.
- Approval of the annual audit report of the Authority.
- Monitoring to ensure that the executive committee is functioning effectively as per the rules.
- Approval of the amendments to the Rules of the Authority.
- Approval of the salary, allowances, service conditions and other facilities to the staff of Authority.
- Sanction of the unforeseen expenses from the contingency fund of the Authority and to approve rules regarding operation and maintenance of this fund.
- Approval of the organizational structure of the Authority.
- Resolution of disputes arising out of policies/decisions /orders/issues of the Executive Committee/Authority

Executive Committee
Subject to the overall supervision and policy directions of the Governing Council and its Committees, the Executive Committee shall be responsible for the management, administration and control of the affairs of the Society.
The Executive Committee shall be responsible for approval of all work contracts and prominent expenditure if in approved budget approved by Governing Council up to Rs. 50 Lakhs.
The Executive Committee shall be responsible of recruitment of all posts as per approved staffing pattern on contractual basis:-
Rights, Powers and Duties of the Executive Committee:
The Executive Committee shall be responsible for implementing appropriate programs to achieve the objectives of the Authority. All the rights, powers of the Authority shall vest in the Executive Committee except the ones not delegated by the Governing Council.
The following functions shall be performed by the Executive Committee.
- Approval of the annual work plan, annual budget, audit reports, annual reports and other relevant proposals before submitting them to the Governing Council.
- Approval of the projects for zoo /bio-parks development.
- Monitoring the implementation of programmes of the Authority.
- Approval of the service conditions, welfare activities of the staff of the Authority.
- Appointment of the auditor for auditing the accounts of the Authority.
- Formulation and Submission of proposals, after due consideration, for amendment of the Rules before the Governing Council.
TENURE OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The term of office of the 'Executive Committee' shall be three years; provided that Committee whose term has expired shall continue until the successor Committee is constituted.

Vision & Mission
To complement and strengthen the efforts at state level for enrichment of zoos and ex-situ conservation of the bio-diversity of the state of Maharashtra, particularly the fauna linked with in-situ practices.
Mission
- To Provide for Proper development and maintenance of the recognized government Zoos in the state of Maharashtra so as to make them model zoological parks.
- To Monitor the implementation of the development plans, scheme, maintenance works in the Zoos in accordance with the regulations issued from time to time by The Central Zoo Authority.
- To bread and rear the in-danger spices of the fauna of India and the other countries with object of saving them from extinction and of restocking other zoos and eventually to enrich the depleted fauna.
- To spread the massage of wildlife conservation through a proper conservation education program (Zoo Outreach Program).
Objective
- Development and maintenance of the recognized Government Zoos.
- To monitor the implementation of the development plans, schemes and maintenance works in the Zoos in Maharashtra.
- To breed and rear the endangered species of the fauna of Maharashtra.
- To carryout zoo education programme.
- To undertake research projects on:
- The conservation breeding of endangered species,
- The behavior of animals and birds in their natural surroundings as well as in captivity,
- Animal Health etc.
- To procure such animals as are required for the zoos in the state of Maharashtra by purchase or exchange, from other states in India or from abroad,
- To disseminate knowledge and information about wildlife by publication of bulletins and journals etc.,
- To subscribe or assist any charitable, benevolent, scientific, national, public or any other institution for achieving the objectives or purposes which are consistent with or which promote the objectives of the society.
- Do all such acts and things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objectives or are directly or indirectly beneficial to the society in the promotion of its object and subjects, subject to the overall control of the government and subject to conformity with the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
Functions
- Development, control and regulation of zoos, improve quality.
- Regulating number and species of animals in the zoos, giving technical advice.
- Setting up criteria for making wild animals available in zoos and its monitoring.
- To provide technical support for preparation of master plan of zoos.
- Monitoring of its implementation.
- Conservation of endangered species of wild animals.
- Implementation of research projects and their monitoring.
- Spread information about zoos amongst people.
